New feature: AND PerformanceData

Generating performance data for amplifier configuration files

Modern amplifiers allow remote adjustment, e.g. based on settings calculated by AND. Changes in the network resulting in necessary amplifier modifications no longer require truck rolls, thereby significantly saving costs. By providing configuration management systems with vital data AND’s new optional function AND PerformanceData helps achieve further cost reductions.

Following a network upgrade, e.g. to DOCSIS 3.1, or a node split where new amplifiers are required, the network has to be “rebalanced” to ensure that it performs correctly and reliably.
AND allows the user to accurately engineer the network prior to any build and determines settings required for the amplifier settings. In major upgrade projects where tens of thousands of amplifiers are involved manually adjusting amplifiers on an individual basis is a time consuming and costly exercise. Furthermore, any manual intervention is of course open to human error.

The optional AND PerformanceData function provides two database tables, one containing amplifier instances and the second generic attribute-value pairs. Performance data can be extracted by the vendor’s Amplifier Management System to generate configuration files. These files are then used to remotely setup the amplifiers according to AND calculations. Adjustments can either be made before or following installation. The configuration file parameters of the amplifier are defined by the user as tags in the component libraries using AND LibEdit (part of AND delivery). Mounted objects and sockets are also taken into consideration as they provide important information for equipping the amplifier.
As soon as the user checks the project into the database the PerformanceData tables are populated with the corresponding data. All output stages are considered. Later changes to the amplifier will result in an update of the previous performance data. As well as the library component name and a common ID, such as the object installation no., other parameters for the amplifier configuration file might include geo-position, address, transponder ID, frequency and calculation of lower and higher pilots, max. frequency, calculated tilt and slope, etc. It is also possible to consider the calculated levels of the high and low pilot frequencies of the final amplifier stage’s output of the previous amplifier.

The AND PerformanceData function can also be used in conjunction with AND DesignAlternative option, which allows the planner to keep network upgrade designs separate from current documentation. Having completed the network plan the user can now trigger a service call from the GUI to the external Amplifier Management System that new amplifier data is available; this can be for more than one amplifier, e.g. a node area.

There was a time when operators had separate teams for network planning, drafting, and documentation; in most cases they even used different tools. Resulting plans were provided to network engineers in the form of large printouts with redlinings returned to the documentation department often weeks later (or even months) for post processing. Fortunately, with the inherent dynamic nature of access networks the trend today is towards a single solution for network design and documentation.

AND however takes this a whole step further with its life-cycle approach including applications for mobile devices. Design and documentation tasks have largely remained 9 to 5 activities. Nevertheless, the data generated is often used around the clock. As today’s networks have to have to be available all the time, any issues must be dealt with immediately regardless of the time – 24/7. Necessary network maintenance and upgrades resulting in outages are often carried out during the night time to cause as little disruption to services as possible.

AND’s highly efficient and reliable modelling of access networks together with interactive web-based applications incorporating redlining functions provide around the clock support for network engineers. Whether armed with tablets, iPads, smartphones, etc. AND WebAccess and additional options ensure field crews have the latest information immediately especially when using the QR-code/barcode data retrieval functions. And now with signal tracing, fibre breakage localisation, as well as photo document management, life just got a little better for everyone. Work reports can now be brilliantly enhanced using the camera and video functions of the mobile devices; include test and measurement reports too.

When the task is completed simply upload everything to AND. The planners & documenters, whether located locally or elsewhere in the world, are instantly informed of the latest redlinings – no waiting an age for dog-eared and coffee stained printouts to arrive in. The recorded documents are automatically stored in the database with virtual containers placed in the correct locations in the documentation if not already available.

AND – simply efficient, efficiently simple.
